PortAventura World Opens a New Chapter Focused on Regenerating the Environment

PortAventura World has unveiled its 2025 Sustainability Report, outlining a comprehensive integration of environmental responsibility across its operations and launching its strategic roadmap for 2026 to 2028.

Following its 30th anniversary milestone, the Costa Daurada resort consolidated its energy transition and decarbonisation strategy. Despite expanding its business footprint over the past year with the addition of the Hotel Ponient Marinada and a new industrial laundry facility, the theme resort successfully reduced its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 21.3 per cent. This reduction aligns with the company’s long-term decarbonisation pathway to 2032, which is validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Resource Management and Circular Economy

Operating in a region experiencing water stress, resource management remains a critical priority for the destination. PortAventura World utilises a dedicated system based on circuit separation, recirculation, and the deployment of non-potable water. These measures achieved a 5 per cent water efficiency improvement across the resort in 2025, representing a saving equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 1,500 local residents.

Furthering its regional footprint, the resort opened PortAventura Facility Services last year. This industrial laundry facility is accessible to local businesses and features integrated water and heat recovery systems, cutting water consumption by 16 per cent compared to conventional commercial laundries while operating entirely on non-potable water.

In terms of waste reduction, the resort’s circular economy initiatives reduced total waste to 523 tonnes per million visitor-overnight stays, a 23.2 per cent decrease compared to 2019. The key measures included a reusable cup system, which successfully eliminated more than 2.3 million disposable containers.

Renewable Energy and Biodiversity

Onsite renewable energy generation continues to expand via PortAventura Solar. Since its inauguration in 2022, the 15,000-panel photovoltaic plant has generated 36.87 GWh of energy, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 11,200 households in Spain. To bridge the gap between commercial operations and community education, the resort also introduced The Energy Circuit, an educational zone at the solar plant designed to introduce school groups to renewable energy technologies.

Local biodiversity initiatives also saw measurable progress. In partnership with the Institut Català d’Ornitologia, the resort’s Swallows Project recorded 214 common swallow nests in 2025, a 14 per cent increase year on year. Active nests reached a record high of 86 since monitoring began. Additionally, an ethical urban wildlife management programme led to the neutering of more than 150 cats to manage the local populations and support animal welfare, supported by employee volunteers.

The 2026–2028 Strategy: Join the Ride, Change the World

The publication of the 2025 report serves as the operational baseline for PortAventura World’s new three-year sustainability strategy, titled Join the Ride, Change the World.

This framework shifts the resort's focus from merely mitigating operational impacts to actively driving the regeneration of local ecosystems and communities.

The strategy is structured around three core pillars:

  • Ride to Regenerate: Focusing on environmental protection and restoration.
  • Ride with Connections: Overseeing social impact, community engagement, and corporate governance.
  • Ride for Emotions: Enhancing the visitor experience through sustainable hospitality.

Over the coming years, the resort will now target specific operational areas, including logistics optimisation, water preservation, the reduction of non-renewable energy consumption, and the enhancement of thermal comfort for both visitors and staff.

Fernando Aldecoa, Managing Director of PortAventura World, commented on the strategy:

“We are aware that protecting the territory in which we operate means protecting the long-term viability of our project. That is why we take on, together with our employees, suppliers and partners, the responsibility of growing while creating value responsibly.”

As the world’s first theme park and resort to achieve B Corp certification, PortAventura World continues to position itself as a leading sustainable destination within the European attractions sector, managing a portfolio that includes multiple theme parks, a convention centre, and over 3,300 hotel rooms.
