Universal Destinations & Experiences has announced a major expansion of its collaboration with The Pokémon Company, unveiling plans to develop innovative, immersive, world-class Pokémon experiences that will debut at Universal Studios Japan before expanding across Universal’s global theme park portfolio.
The announcement represents a significant evolution of the relationship between Universal and Pokémon, moving beyond limited-time entertainment offerings toward long-term, large-scale attractions. It also marks one of the most high-profile partnerships in the global attractions industry, bringing together a leading theme park operator and one of the world’s most recognisable entertainment brands.
A New Era of Immersive Entertainment
Under the expanded partnership, Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company will collaborate on entirely new experiences designed to bring the Pokémon universe to life in fresh and compelling ways. The focus is on delivering highly immersive environments that combine storytelling, innovation, and fan engagement.
Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration, emphasising the value of working with imaginative and inventive storytellers to create attractions that exceed guest expectations. Pokémon was described as one of the most globally beloved and interactive franchises, making it a natural fit for Universal’s experience-driven development strategy.
Tak Murayama, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Studios Japan, confirmed that the initiative will begin in Osaka, reinforcing the park’s role as a launch platform for major new concepts within the Universal portfolio.
Global Expansion Planned
While specific attraction formats, opening dates, and themed land details have not yet been disclosed, Universal confirmed that the Pokémon experiences are intended to extend beyond Japan. Following their debut at Universal Studios Japan, unique Pokémon offerings are planned for additional Universal destinations worldwide.
The announcement aligns with Universal’s broader strategy of leveraging globally recognised intellectual property to create destination-defining attractions, drive repeat visitation, and support long-term growth across its theme park business.
Strategic Significance for the Attractions Industry
Universal Studios Japan has featured Pokémon entertainment elements since 2021 through parades and seasonal activations. The newly announced initiative elevates the partnership to a permanent, large-scale collaboration, reflecting the growing importance of established global IP in the competitive attractions landscape.
For industry stakeholders - including attraction designers, technology providers, manufacturers, and creative partners - the partnership signals potential new opportunities tied to large-scale immersive development, interactive technologies, and branded experiences.
The timing also coincides with Pokémon’s upcoming 30th anniversary, adding further momentum to the franchise’s expansion into location-based entertainment.
Looking Ahead
Further announcements are expected to provide more clarity on attraction concepts, timelines, and international rollout plans. As development progresses, the industry will be closely watching how Universal and The Pokémon Company translate one of the world’s most successful entertainment brands into fully immersive, next-generation theme park experiences.
