First Look: Wake The Tiger Opens Absurd City in London

When the team behind the UK's iconic Boomtown Fair launched Wake The Tiger in Bristol back in 2022, they coined a brand-new term for their creation: the world's first 'Amazement Park'. A previous visit to the original Dream Factory attraction in Bristol, meant we knew roughly what realm of cosmic eccentricity to expect when stepping through the portal at Westfield London. Yet, as we stepped into Absurd City, the sheer scale and creative ambition took us completely by surprise.

Opening officially on Thursday 15 October 2026, Absurd City is Europe's largest immersive art experience. It expands upon the parallel world of Meridia, a universe already familiar to Bristol visitors. Think of the two sites as different books within the same rich, sci-fi series. However, where Bristol introduced us to the concept, London blows the doors wide open.

The Five Districts: Masterclass in Narrative Zone Design

Set under a protective weather-proof dome, the narrative layout of Absurd City is divided into five distinct themed districts, monitored by REX, the city's cutesy canine digital surveillance interface:

  • Bloom Street: The entry precinct presenting a hyperactive, hyper-luxurious consumer paradise. Key installations include the Stock Exchange, Luxury Corner Shop, Make-U-Better Pharmaceuticals, and REX News headquarters.
  • Reclamia: The industrial waste-processing district handling the scrap generated by Bloom Street. This zone showcases incredible upcycled contraptions and houses the Absurd City Museum, preserving relics from before the climate collapse.
  • Imaginopolis: A vibrant, technicolour sanctuary where art, nature, and play collide, serving as a creative counter-narrative to REX's corporate control.
  • Neon//Nexus: A cyber-punk haven for hackers and biohackers splicing technology with organic plant life in an effort to reboot Meridia's lost nature.
  • Elite HQ: A exclusive corporate gated community for the city's elite, requiring 'Emerald Platinum Elite' status to gain entry past designer gates.

After navigating through these five contrasting environments, guests arrive at The Genny for the experience's dramatic narrative finale.

Navigating the Surreal Metropolis

The experience invites visitors, dubbed Daytrippers, to journey through a portal into a sprawling metropolis operating under a protective dome. The storyline feels significantly clearer and more grounded than its predecessor, driven by a strong, accessible environmental message that never feels overly complex.

The design balances breathtaking scale with intricate details:

  • Massive Vistas & Hidden Nooks: Spectacular open scenes deliver immediate impact, seamlessly blending into intimate, tactile spaces filled with secret doors, hidden rooms, and even a tunnel to crawl through.
  • Live Character Encounters: Throughout the metropolis, visitors encounter live actors portraying the eccentric inhabitants of Meridia. The addition of these character performers greatly enhances the atmosphere, bringing the world alive beyond static props.
  • Multi-Sensory Design: The world-building extends well beyond sight and sound. An extensive use of custom scents throughout the districts stimulates the senses, ensuring each space possesses a distinct identity to match its visuals.
  • Hands-on Interactivity: Absurd City features far more interactive elements than the Bristol location. You do not just look at the world; you physically engage with it, encouraging guests to linger much longer in every space.
  • Embedded Tech: Rather than relying on overt tech showpieces, screen overloads, or RFID wristbands, technology is cleverly integrated directly into the physical scenery and narrative.

Behind the Scenes: Construction & Sustainability

During an exclusive preview tour of the space, CEO and Co-Founder Graham MacVoy alongside Creative Director Anya Tye shared the effort required to bring this world to life.

Over 500 creatives, including scenic artists, mechanics, and prop makers, built the space. As a certified B Corporation, Wake The Tiger has repurposed elements from film sets, car boot sales, and salvaged infrastructure from the site's previous tenant, KidZania.

Absurd City Key Metrics
Total Footprint 80,000 sq ft
Creative Personnel 500+ makers & artists
Timed Ticket Capacity 200 per 30 minutes
Maximum Hourly Throughput 400 guests per hour
Average Dwell Time 2 to 3 hours

Interestingly, the team is currently utilising around 75% of the total available space, leaving plenty of physical capacity for future expansion zones.

Food, Drink & After Hours

Rather than finishing with a standard food court, the journey concludes at the Wunderground Bar & Kitchen, which serves as an extended, fully themed chapter of the experience itself.

The menu offers themed cocktails and mocktails alongside quality street food. We tried the delicious tacos paired with the Hurricane 0%, a tropical mix of passion fruit, mango, coconut cream, and vanilla, served over crushed ice and topped with a candy floss cloud.

For those looking for a different atmosphere, selected dates will feature adult-only After Hours events running from 7:00 PM until Midnight, offering a brilliant night out without children around.

Our Verdict

Absurd City is a triumphant leap forward for immersive storytelling in the UK. Combining high-level world-building, impressive physical sets, and some genuine heart, it stands as a landmark addition to the UK attractions sector.

Absurd City is far more than a ambitious expansion for Wake The Tiger; it marks a defining moment for the UK location-based entertainment (LBE) sector. By successfully scaling their Bristol concept into an 80,000-square-foot flagship at Westfield London, the creators have demonstrated that homegrown, original IP can comfortably anchor a major retail destination.

What sets Absurd City apart from many contemporary immersive attractions is its long-term operational design. The decision to prioritise physical craftsmanship, sensory scent-design, live performance, and embedded storytelling over short-lived digital gimmicks gives the experience genuine longevity and strong repeat-visit potential. Furthermore, with 25% of the footprint still unallocated, Wake The Tiger has cleverly built in future-proofing for expansion and seasonal iterations.
