BALPPA Marks 90 Years of Representing the UK Attractions Industry

The British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers & Attractions (BALPPA) is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2026, marking nine decades of representing and supporting the UK’s commercial attractions and leisure sector.

Founded in 1936 as the Association of Amusement Park Proprietors (AAPP), the organisation was established by a small group of pioneering families – including the Thompson, Butlin and Isles families – to protect the interests of Britain’s predominantly seaside amusement businesses. In 1986, the association adopted its current name, reflecting the expanding scope and diversity of the UK attractions industry.

Today, BALPPA represents a broad cross-section of the sector, including theme and leisure parks, piers, zoos, family entertainment centres, static visitor attractions, and the suppliers and service providers that support them. The association plays a central role in lobbying government, influencing legislation, promoting the industry’s strong safety record, and encouraging collaboration and best practice across its membership.

Reflecting on the milestone, Paul Kelly, Chief Executive of BALPPA, highlighted both the organisation’s heritage and its forward-looking focus:

“As we welcome in 2026, we're thrilled to be celebrating BALPPA's 90th Year. Now in its 90th year, BALPPA continues to proudly represent the interests of the UK's commercial leisure parks, piers, zoos, family entertainment centres, static visitor attractions sector and those businesses that supply the industry.”

Kelly also praised the resilience shown by members in recent years, noting that despite ongoing challenges, the sector continues to innovate and deliver new experiences:

“Our Members have shown amazing resilience in the face of adversity and despite growing challenges, we continue to work together to push boundaries to ensure that the industry remains at the forefront of innovation.”

He added that BALPPA members are delivering UK and global firsts, while maintaining an excellent safety record and high standards of guest service for both domestic and international visitors.

As part of its anniversary year, BALPPA will celebrate not only its history, but also the collaboration that underpins its success. Kelly extended thanks to members, committee contributors, sponsors, hosts and partners who support the association’s extensive programme of events, education and networking opportunities.

“On behalf of our Chairman, Management Committee and the BALPPA Team, thank you and here's to a wonderful 90th anniversary year.”

The 90th anniversary marks a significant moment for BALPPA as it continues to champion the UK attractions industry at a time of rapid change, technological advancement and renewed focus on guest experience, safety and sustainability.
