Universal UK Resort to Gain Dedicated Rail Station Within "First Few Years" of Opening

As Universal Destinations & Experiences moves forward with its highly anticipated UK project, a significant update regarding regional travel connectivity has emerged. East West Rail (EWR) has confirmed that the resort is expected to be served by a dedicated train station within its "first few years" of operation.

The announcement coincides with the launch of an eight-week public consultation on the £6 billion East West Rail project, which aims to link Oxford and Cambridge via Bedford and Milton Keynes.

Fast-Tracking Connectivity for the "Universal Effect"

While Universal's Bedfordshire resort is tentatively slated for a 2031 opening, EWR has revealed plans to "fast-track" upgrades to the Marston Vale Line. By accelerating these works, rail officials believe the infrastructure will be ready to accommodate the influx of international and domestic visitors shortly after the park’s gates open.

The proposed station will be located at Stewartby, situated on the existing line between Bedford and Bletchley. As part of a broader modernisation strategy, EWR intends to consolidate the current nine smaller stations on the Marston Vale Line into four larger, high-capacity hubs.

To manage the scale of the "Universal effect" on local transport, EWR has also adjusted its rolling stock and frequency plans:

  • Increased Capacity: Trains will be extended from four to five carriages to handle higher passenger volumes.
  • Service Frequency: The line is expected to support four trains per hour by the early 2030s, eventually rising to five.

A Collaborative Vision for Growth

For industry professionals, the integration of heavy rail infrastructure into the park’s early lifecycle is a clear indicator of the project’s strategic importance to the UK’s "Golden Triangle" economy.

Gidon Freeman, Vice President of External Affairs, Universal Destinations & Experiences, said:

"The proposed station by Universal would enhance guest and team member arrival."

Until the station is fully operational, Universal plans to operate shuttle bus services from Milton Keynes to bridge the gap for early visitors.

David Hughes, CEO of East West Railway Company, emphasised that the updated proposals are a direct response to future growth:

"By bringing forward key elements of the railway and planning for increased demand, we are helping to ensure the infrastructure is in place to support future growth and opportunities for our communities."

Next Steps for the Industry

The news marks another milestone for the Bedfordshire site, where Universal has already established a temporary headquarters. With planning permission granted last December, the focus now shifts to the statutory planning process for the rail link.

Following the public consultation which opened on 14 April 2026, EWR expects to submit a formal application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) to the UK Government in 2027.

For theme park operators and service providers, the commitment to early rail access underscores the scale of Universal’s UK ambitions, positioning the Bedford resort as one of the most accessible major attractions in Europe.
