A new collaboration in the visitor attraction industry promises to deliver deep, data-driven insights to help operators refine their commercial strategies. Visitor Attraction Intelligence (VAI), a joint initiative between ticketing and point-of-sale software provider DigiTickets and specialist attraction marketing agency Agility Marketing, has launched its inaugural research publication: the Booking Lead Times Report.
Designed to decode the trends, shifts, and opportunities shaping the diverse leisure sector, VAI combines millions of anonymised booking records from DigiTickets with Agility Marketing's commercial expertise. Rather than focusing on individual venues, the intelligence platform examines broader market patterns across a wide array of attractions, including theme parks, zoos, water parks, museums, heritage sites, botanical gardens, and adventure parks.
Decoding Visitor Behaviour
The debut report tackles a critical question facing leisure operators across the board: how far in advance are visitors really booking?
While industry professionals have widely observed that booking lead times are generally growing shorter, VAI's new research uses robust transactional data to quantify these shifts precisely. By analysing millions of tickets, the report explores how booking windows vary across different types of attractions, how customer commitment times change during school holidays, and what these trends mean for commercial planning, pricing, and marketing campaigns.
Jamie Faulkner, operations director at DigiTickets, highlighted the value of unlocking this transactional data for the wider sector:
"For a number of years, we have been aware that the volume of tickets processed through DigiTickets gives us a substantial source of insight into visitor behaviour. We have wanted to explore how we could use that anonymised data for the benefit of our clients and the wider sector, but finding the right partner was important. Agility brings the visitor attraction knowledge and commercial marketing expertise to help us interrogate the data and understand what it is telling us."
Anita Waddell, CEO at Agility Marketing, emphasised the practical application of the findings for operators:
"After working in the attractions industry for over 25 years, I know how vital accurate data is to better inform and shape commercial planning. With VAI, we are taking this one step further. We are providing new context, and sharing our expertise to accompany this data, in perceptive and purposeful reports that businesses can learn from or use to validate their own findings and experiences."
Highlights From the New Booking Lead Times Report
Based on an analysis of over 3 million anonymised admission tickets processed between January and August 2026 across 56 UK venues, the inaugural VAI report sheds light on real consumer habits:
- Last-Minute Bookings Dominate: The data reveals that 45.9% of online bookings are made on the exact same day as the visit, with 67.9% booked within a 24-hour window.
- School Holidays Shift Behaviour Further: During school holiday periods, over 70% of bookings occur within 24 hours of arrival (compared to 63% during term time), and advance planners compress their window down to 3 to 4 days ahead rather than the typical 7-day term-time average.
- Attraction Type Variances: Booking curves vary wildly depending on the type of venue. Boat trips and railways see the longest lead times, with 80.3% of bookings made 2+ days in advance (averaging 28 days out). Conversely, country parks and gardens lean heavily toward spontaneity, with 80.9% booking within 24 hours. Theme parks sit comfortably in the middle, with 52.9% booking within 24 hours and 47.1% planning 2+ days ahead.
- Discovery vs. Conversion: While visitors commit late, they often consider their options weeks prior. This insight underscores the need for operators to split their strategy: maintaining early brand awareness and discovery campaigns while tightening conversion messaging closer to the date of visit.
Looking Ahead
Following its debut, VAI plans to release ongoing, free-to-access research reports exploring various themes relevant to the attractions industry.
